BC Georgia Tech Recap

Under Steve Addazio BC has lost multiple games while outplaying their opponents.  This happened again on Saturday.  BC outgained Georgia Tech, was actually able to move the ball on offense, and completely shutdown the option attack.  In the end it did not matter, as Georgia Tech made plays down the stretch when it mattered.

On the offense of side of the ball, BC did not excel, but looked much improved from last season.  The oline produced some good holes, and they were able to make some plays in the passing game.  Once they started to open up the playbook, they moved the ball decently well.  However, it took almost a quarter to get in a rythem.  This will not be an offense that lights up the scoreboard, but it is not the desaster that happened last year.  The main problem with the offense/special teams was the inability to come away with points once they hit the 30-yard line.  Missing two field goals, and a strip sack killed BC.  Some of this is just bad luck and a sloppy, rainy field.  But the biggest problem is the lack of aggression.  They went with a field goal instead of going for it on fourth and one.  Late in the game, once they had the lead, the playcalling turned into 3 runs up the middle and punt.

The defense picked up right where they left off last season.  They completely shut down Georgia Tech’s offense.  They only allowed 119 yards rushing and did not let up any big plays.  They also were able to get into the backfield all game and made multiple tackles for loss.  The one problem they had was getting off the field on 3rd and 4th down.  Many times GT was able to complete passes to wide-open receivers on these plays.  The next few weeks will let us know whether there are holes in the secondary or whether this was an effect of playing an option team.

Overall BC looked much improved from last year.  The offense look better, and the defense dominated.  However, they still lost.  This is on coaching.  BC has constantly lost while playing better over the last few years, including to Colorado State, Penn State, Wake Forest, and Syracuse.  The same problems have come up in all of these games.  The inability to score points in the red zone, and becoming conservative at the end of games.  This is on coaching.  While the team looks better, this looks like it will be another frustrating season to be a BC fan.
