BC NC State Recap

Boston College got their first ACC win in 700 days and a potentially season saving win over NC State on Saturday.  The Eagles came out strong and played more aggressively than they have all year.  They used a big play touchdown, a trick play touchdown, and the defense lived in the Wolfpack backfield all day.

When BC had the Ball:  BC came out aggressively and threw the ball early and often.  Patrick Towles had his best half as an Eagle in the 1st half of this one.  However, he struggled in the second half, particularly in the 3rd quarter.  Towles did make enough key plays in the fourth to produce a game winning drive.  This was the Towles that BC expected all year, not perfect, but gave BC an aerial threat.  The Eagle receivers played their best game of the year so far.  Tommy Sweeney had the best game of this career, and did a great job of sneaking off of the line on play action, in order to get open. It was very reminiscent of the way Alex Amidon used to get open on play action, by faking that he was going to block the corner.  Jeff Smith and Michael Walker were also playmakers for the Eagles.  Smith took a jet sweep for a 60 yards TD, while Walker had 6 catches for 78 yards.  The BC offense excels when those 2 are making long gains.  While BC didn’t dominate on the ground, they were able to create some long runs, and gain yards when needed.  NC State only had 3 tackles for loss, which was a huge improvement for the line.  Jonathan Hilliman received the bulk of the carries after missing last week, and had a decent game, and picked up a few key first downs.  Myles Willis was very efficient with the carries he got, and had 41 yards on just 5 carries.  Overall, it was the best offensive game BC has played against an ACC opponent this year.  They came out aggressive, threw the ball more, especially early, and produced 8 plays of over 15 yards.  The one area where BC struggled was scoring TDs instead of field goals in the red zone, which will need to improve if BC wants to knock off Louisville or Florida State.

When NC State had the Ball:  BC completely dominated the line of scrimmage on Saturday.  The defense held NC Sate to just 1.3 yards per carry, and discounting sacks it was still only 2.9.  NC State was forced to throw on the goal line at the end of the game, resulting in the interception to seal the win.  The Eagles had a great pass rush as well, and seemed to get pressure every time Ryan Finley dropped back in the second half.   This helped the secondary, which improved as the game progressed.  The pressure helped the BC secondary play tighter on receivers, lowering Finley’s completion percentage in the second half.  The one area where BC struggled again was giving up the long touchdown as NC State had an 80 yards TD and a 50 yard TD which got called back.  The biggest reason for the defense playing so well, was the aggressiveness.  Paul Pasqualoni called plays in replace of Jim Reid who missed the game with a medical issue, and did an excellent job of getting pressure on the QB.  That is the way BC must play all the time.

Overall: BC got the first ACC win by playing the way it needed to play all year.  They came out aggressive on both sides of the ball, and capitalized on big plays.  The win saves the season for now, and allows BC to have a chance again at going bowling.  Steve Addazio might be able to survive for another year with this victory and another of Uconn.  Hopefully, the team uses this win as a stepping stone for the rest of the season.

Week 9 Winners and Losers

Winners:

Florida: Florida picked up a big win over Georgia on Saturday.  Tennessee lost on Saturday as well, giving the Gators a 2 game lead in the SEC East.

Washington:  The Huskies picked up a big win over #17 Utah, arguably their toughest game on the schedule.  In addition, multiple top 10 teams loss, which now gives Washington a chance to make the playoff even if they loss a game.

Losers:

Big 12: There is no undefeated team left in the conference with both Baylor and West Virginia losing their first game on Saturday.  They still are the only 2 teams with less than 2 losses in the conference, but both played bad non-conference schedules which will most likely prevent them, or any Big 12 team, from making the playoffs.

Boise State: Boise lost their first game of the season on Saturday by 2 at Wyoming.  With the loss, it becomes very unlikely Boise will make the new year’s six.  Boise will need to win out, and have Wyoming lose twice in order to have a chance.

BC Syracuse Preview

Boston College, coming off a devastating loss to Syracuse last weekend, heads to Raleigh to take on the Wolfpack of NC State.  BC is looking to get back to .500 and to keep its slim chances of a bowl alive with a win.  NC State is favored by 15 points in this one.

What to Watch When BC has the Ball:  The Boston College running game improved last week against Syracuse.  Starter Jon Hilliman did not play, but backup Davon Jones rushed for 66 yards on 14 carries.  Look for Jones to continue to get the bulk of the carries even if Hilliman plays this weekend.  Also, BC has been making more of an effort to get Jeff Smith and Michael Walker involved in the run game, as both of them can break one for a touchdown if they get space.  NC State is strong against the run, and held Clemson to under 4 yards per carry.  They particularly excel down in the red zone, where they do well to stop power runs.  NC State can be beat through the air.  However, the Eagles have not thrown well against any quality opponents so far this season.  BC may be starting a new QB in Darius Wade on Saturday, who look good in limited action against Syracuse.  Wade will need help from his receivers, who have dropped over 10% of catching opportunities this season.

What to Watch When NC State has the Ball:  NC State has moved the ball well on the ground so far this season.  They are lead by Matthew Dayes, who has already rushed for over 100 yards 5 times this year.  Dayes was banged up against Louisville last week, but it expected to be ready to go for Saturday.  On defense, BC has excelled at stopping the run.  They have shut down the run game from every team except for Clemson this year.  The Eagles defensive line has been excellent, and needs to play well again to stop Dayes.  It will also be key for BC to get pressure without blitzing much on Saturday.  Harold Landry already has 8 sacks this season, and should be able to get into the backfield.  Last week, Eric Dungey was able to pick apart the BC secondary.  NC State quarterback Ryan Finely is very efficient through the air.  He has completed 62% of his passes and has 11 TDs compared to 4 INT.  However, NC State does not have game changers at the receiver position.  The Boston College cornerbacks should be able to keep NC State in front of them, and not give up the long touchdown that cost them last week.

Overall: The key in the game for BC is the effort that they put in.  It would be very easy for the Eagles to give up this season, as they are unlikely to reach bowl eligibility, the coach will probably be fired at the end of the season, and the quarterback was hurt last week.  However, BC has the talent to win in this game.  NC State is a tough but beatable opponent.  BC needs to start the game aggressive, and cannot afford to fall behind early.  The Eagles offense has struggled in the firs quarter so far this season, and that must change on Saturday.  If BC comes out of the gates strong, and plays aggressively, they can easily win this game.  If BC does not show up, they will lose by at least 20.  I think the Eagles will come out strong, and throw everything at NC State in this one.

Prediction: Boston College 21 NC State 20

Virignia Tech’s defensive line showed that it can dominate games, and Jarrod Evans will be able to throw against Pitt’s defense.

Best Bets

Season: 18-17-3 (Locks of the Week: 2-5-1)
Last Week: 4-0-1

Virginia Tech @ Pittsburgh- VT -3
Washington @ Utah- Utah +10
Auburn @ Ole Miss- Auburn -4.5

What to Watch in Week 9

Thursday Night

#25 Virginia Tech @ Pittsburgh- 7:00 ESPN
California @ Southern California- 10:30 ESPN

Virginia Tech plays their second straight Thursday Night game, as they head to Pittsburgh where they try to win for the first time since 1999.  Virginia Tech beat Miami last week, and with a win, would be the clear front runners in the ACC Coastal.  Virginia Tech must stop James Connor and the Pittsburgh ground game, while Pitt must contain the Hokie pass rush which destroyed the Miami offensive line last Thursday.  In the nightcap, Cal plays a red-hot USC.  Cal beat Oregon in double overtime last weekend, while USC has won 3 straight since starting the season 1-3.  USC’s starting QB Sam Darnold is one of the most efficient passers in the country, while Cal has struggled on defense this year.

Friday Night

#22 Navy @ South Florida- 7:30 ESPN2

Navy looks to continue its stranglehold on the AAC West with a win at USF on a Friday Night.  Navy has a one game lead in the division, and owns the tie-breaker over Memphis, who is one game back.  South Florida started the year strong but has faded recently.  Their season can get back on track with a win.

Saturday Day

#10 West Virginia @ Oklahoma State- 12:00 FOX
#2 Michigan @ Michigan State- 12:00 ESPN
#5 Louisville @ Virginia- 12:00 ABC

West Virginia looks to continue its undefeated season when they play Oklahoma State.  Both of Oklahoma State’s losses have been by a combined 14 points, and they are capable of an upset.  West Virginia’s defense has been their strength all season, and will need to stay that way if they want to beat the strong offense of Oklahoma State.  Elsewhere, Michigan looks to end a three game losing streak to the Spartans.  Michigan is the much better team this year, and should win the back the Paul Bunyan Trophy for just the second time in 8 seasons.  In the ACC, Louisville heads to UVA.  Lousiville is way too talented for Virginia, and look for Lamar Jackson to put up eye popping stats in this one.

Saturday Afternoon

#4 Washington @ #17 Utah- 3:30 FS1
#14 Florida VS Georgia- 3:30 CBS (Jacksonville)
#8 Baylor @ Texas- 3:30 ABC

College Gameday is in Salt Lake City to watch Washington play Utah.  Washington has risen all the way to #4 in both polls, but has yet to play a team that is currently ranked.  Jake Browning has been one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the country, throwing for 26 touchdowns to just 2 interceptions this year.  In addition to Browning, the Washington defense, and in particular their defensive line has been dominate this season.  They will need to be again, as Utah’s Joe Williams ran for over 300 yards last weekend against UCLA.  No matter who wins this one, it could be a preview of the PAC12 championship.  On CBS, Florida takes on Georgia in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.  If Florida wins out, then the Gators will win the SEC East.  Georgia is coming off a loss to Vanderbilt, while Florida’s offense has improved in recent weeks since Luke Del Rio has returned from injury.  In the Big 12, Baylor continues its quiet undefeated season against Texas.  Texas has struggled this season, but still has a strong offense, which should be enough to challenge Baylor.  It will be up to Baylor’s offense to pour on the points, against a bad Texas defense.

Saturday Night

#7 Nebraska @ #11 Wisconsin- 7:00 ESPN
#15 Auburn @ Ole Miss- 7:15 SEC Network
#3 Clemson @ #12 Florida State- 8:00 ABC

Nebraska heads to Wisconsin in a matchup between the top 2 teams in the Big 10 West.   Nebraska has yet to play a ranked team all year, whereas, Wisconsin has beaten LSU, and only lost to Ohio State and Michigan by 7 each.  Nebraska will still control their own destiny with a win, but they head to Ohio State next weekend.  On the SEC network, Auburn looks to continue their hot streak when they take on Ole Miss.  Auburn ran all over Arkansas last weekend, and look for that to continue against an Ole Miss squad that has struggled against the run this season.  Auburn posses one of the best defenses in the SEC, and will need to show it off against Chad Kelly, arguably the best quarterback in the country.  In the ACC, Clemson takes on Florida State, in a showdown between two top 15 teams.  Florida State has rebounded from their 2 game losing streak, with a strong win over Miami.  They has used Dalvin Cook much more as the season has progressed.  Clemson will have Wayne Gallman back on Saturday, and will use him to slow down a strong Florida State pass rush.  With a win, Clemson will have an easy path to the ACC Championship game.

Saturday Late Night

Washington State @ Oregon State- 10:45 ESPN2
Stanford @ Arizona- 11:00 FS1

Washington State looks to stay unbeaten in the PAC12 in a late night against Oregon State.  Oregon State is 2-5 so far on the season and should not be much of a challenge for Washington State.  Elsewhere in the PAC12 Stanford heads to Arizona.  Stanford has not scored more than 20 points since September 24, and will be going with a new quarterback in this one.

Boston College Needs to Start Wade

Darius Wade should start for Boston College on Saturday and the rest of the season no matter if Patrick Towles is healthy or not.  The Boston College offense has not played well enough to win in any of their ACC games so far this season.  The Eagles have yet to score 21 points in a game so far.  Towles has struggled in ACC games, and most recently went just 4-14 for 45 yards against Syracuse on Saturday.  Towles is a grad-transfer from Kentucky, who is out of eligibility following this season.  However, Wade is a red-shirt sophomore, who has two years left after this season.  Starting in the last half of the season will provide him with much needed experience for the future.  Wade could also provide a spark needed for the Eagles to turn the season around.   Even if the change does not work out, what does Boston College have to lose?

Boston College Syracuse Recap

Boston College lost again on Saturday to extend their ACC losing streak to 12 games.  The Eagles had multiple chances near the end of the game to tie or even take the lead.  However, they were unable to convert on any of these.  Syracuse outgained BC 532 to 287, but only won 28-20.

When BC had the Ball:  Patrick Towles played arguably his worst game as an Eagle.  He struggled early on, completing his first pass with only 2 minutes to go in the second quarter.  He did not look confident in his decision making as multiple times he struggled whether to run or pass when his first or second read was not open.  Overall, he completed only 4 of 14 passes, but he did have a 78 yards touchdown run that kept BC in the game.  Towles left the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent hamstring injury.  He was replaced by Darius Wade, who played decent in the few snaps he took.  The BC quarterbacks were not helped out much by their receivers.  Michael Walker led the Eagles with 40 yards receiving, but made a crucial drop on a pass that was eventually intercepted by the goal line.  The Eagles were improved on the ground as they had 223 yards rushing on 40 carries.  Davon Jones had a nice game with 66 yards on 14 carries.  The offensive line for Boston College were decent run blockers, but struggled with pass blocking.  Syracuse was able to get pressure throughout the game, even when they only rushed 3 or 4. They gave up a big sack at the end of the game when BC was driving to try to tie up the game.  In the last 3 quarters, the BC offense played fine, but made mistakes that cost them points.  Where they really struggled was early in the game as they only had 1 first down in the 1st quarter, and BC scored on a kickoff return for a touchdown, and had a field goal set up by a interception.  In reality, the BC offense only scored 10 points.

When Syracuse had the Ball: If you only look at the scoreboard, the BC defense played well enough to win the game.  However, they did not have their best day as a unit.  Syracuse had over 500 yards of offense, and Eric Dungey was 32 for 38 through the air.  The defensive strategy in the secondary did not work.  The defensive backs played off receivers, trying to take away the big play. This allowed Syracuse easy passes underneath that they connected on.  However, it did not stop the Eagles from giving up the big play in the air, as Syracuse scored on a 68 yards touchdown, and had 4 passes over 30 yards.  The BC front seven played much better than the secondary.  They held Syracuse to just 98 yards on 35 rushes, and got decent pressure.  Where the defense excelled was creating turnovers, and putting the offense in good field position.

Overall: BC used the big play to stay in this one.  Without it, they would have been blown off of the field.  However, it still wasn’t enough.  The offense came out flat early in the game, and the defense gave up too many long passes.  The offense strategy used by BC looked desperate, as they used multiple reverses, and end around, and used the wildcat.  These did not work well, and too the offense out of rhythm.  Darius Wade played due to an injury to Towles near the end of the game, and look for him to play more as the season goes on.  With the loss this season is pretty much over, as the team needs to win 3 more games in order to make a bowl.  While that is still possible with 5 games left, and NC State, Uconn and Wake Forest still to go, it is highly unlikely.  This game also sealed Addazio’s fate, as reports have surfaced that he needs to make a bowl game in order to retain his job.  The Eagles are now on a 12 game ACC losing streak, and a 14 game losing streak against power 5 opponents.  Under Addazio, BC is now 6-12 in one score games, and 1-6 in the last 2 years.  BC has always found was to lose under Daz.  His conservative style leads to this.  If the program continues under his direction, BC will dig themselves into a hole that will take years to come out of.

Boston College Syracuse Preview

Boston College looks to get back above .500 and keep its bowl chance alive against Syracuse on Saturday.  The Orange comes in after a big upset win over Virginia Tech, but with a record of 3-4.  The Eagles are favored by 4.5 points.

What to Watch When BC has the Ball:  The BC offense has been absolutely terrible this season against ACC opponents.  They have only scored 24 points in 3 games, and have not scored over 20 in an ACC game since playing Syracuse in 2014.  That’s a span of 10 games, equal to their ACC losing streak.  In order to win on Saturday, BC will need to change that.  Syracuse is a weak defensive squad, and they have given up 62 to Louisville, 45 to South Florida, and 50 Notre Dame.  It will be seen if holding Virginia Tech to 17 last week is a sign of improvement, or an outlier.  Where BC needs to attack Syracuse is through the running game.  In every game so far, Syracuse has given up over 100 yards on the ground.  BC needs to finally get Jon Hilliman and Davon Jones going.  Hilliman has struggled averaging only 3.4 yards per carry on the season, which gets knocked down to 2.7 without the 73 yard run against Georgia Tech.  This may not be all Hilliman’s fault, as Football Outsider’s grades BC’s offensive line 124th out of 128 division 1 teams.  The line has struggled all year, but should be able to provide enough push against a weak Syracuse defensive line.  In the air, BC needs to see more production out of their receivers.  The Eagles have the highest drop percentage in the country, and need to help out Towles every chance they get.  Michael Walker has been very quiet since the Wagner game, and needs to get back on track.  Look to see BC throw more screens, and run end arounds to help get him and Smith the ball in space.  BC does not need to light up the scoreboard, but they need to capitalize with touchdowns instead of field goals in the red zone, and avoid putting pressure on their own defense.

What to Watch When Syracuse has the Ball: It starts and ends with Eric Dungey for Syracuse.  He is a don it all dual-threat quarterback, who controls the Orange’s up-tempo offense.  Last week against Virginia Tech, he has over 300 yards passing and over 100 yards rushing.  If that happens again this weekend, Syracuse will win easily.  However, outside of last weekend, he has not rushed for more than 50 yards in a game, and only rushed for more than 25 yards once.  While he can be contained on the ground, he has been very efficient through the air with a 62% completion percentage, and 12 touchdowns to 5 interceptions.  The key for the Eagles will be to force Syracuse to use long drives to beat them.  The Orange have no running game to speak of outside of Dungey, and use big plays through the air to ignite their offense.  This means that BC must clean up their defensive breakdowns that they have suffered all season.  Safety John Johnson must play his best game of the season, and to make sure he does not get beat deep.  Where BC should have a huge advantage is with their front seven.  Harold Landry should have a field day knowing that Syrause will drop back to pass 40 to 50 times, and are not a threat to run the ball.  Look for the Orange to be held to less than 50 yards rushing, as the BC dline should control the line of scrimmage.

Overall: BC lost 49-0 to a Virginia Tech team that Syracuse beat by 2 touchdowns last weekend.  However, this is that same Syracuse team that lost to Wake Forest by 19 and USF by 25.  It will be interesting to see which Syracuse team shows up.  For Boston College, it will be about how they start the game.  If BC gets behind, the ACC losing streak may get into their heads, and they could lose confidence in the coaching staff and quit.  BC is not a team built to play from behind, and their offense struggles when they are forced to through.  However, if BC can take an early lead, they will be able use a potentially dominate defense to sit on the lead and win.  The Eagles are the more talented team, and Syracuse has shown that outside of last week, they are a bad football team.  Look for BC to struggle on offense early but use big plays to score, and for the defense to shut down Syracuse in an ugly win.

Prediction: Boston College: 20 Syracuse 9

Week 8 Predictions and Best Bets

Season: 66-29
Last Week: 11-2

Thursday

Miami @ Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech defense shuts down Brad Kaaya, as Jarod Evans does enough for the Hokies to get the win.

BYU @ #14 Boise State

Boise State struggled last week in a win over Colorado State, and has not played a team as talented as BYU since the Washington State the second week of the season.  Look for BYU’s defense to shut down Boise as the Cougars pull off the upset in a close matchup.

Friday

Oregon @ California

Cal’s offense will be able to move the ball up and down the field against a horrid Duck defense.

Saturday

#10 Wisconsin @ Iowa

Wisconsin’s offense has struggled this season against quality opponents, and Iowa’s defense will be able to stop them, and win in a low scoring affair.

NC State @ #7 Louisville

Louisville and Lamar Jackson will have no trouble with an NC State squad that almost upset Clemson last weekend.

Texas @ Kansas State

Shane Buschele and Texas will be able to put up points against Kansas State, while K-State won’t be able to keep up in the shootout.

#6 Texas A&M @ #1 Alabama

Alabama is looking like the most dominate college team since Florida State in 2013, and are 18 point favorites this weekend.  Their offensive line will be able to slow down Myles Garrett and A&M’s pass rush, and will use the big play to win easily.

TCU @ #12 West Virginia

West Virginia’s defense may be the best in the Big 12, and their offense will be able to score on a weak TCU defense.

Memphis @ #24 Navy

Navy will be able to control the game with the option, and will put up huge numbers on the ground against Memphis.

#17 Arkansas @ #21 Auburn

Auburn’s defense is too strong for the one-dimensional Razorbacks, and Tigers QB Sean White has been improving all year.

#22 Ohio State @ Penn State

JT Barrett and Ohio State will have no trouble with an average Penn State squad

#16 Oklahoma @ Texas Tech

Baker Mayfield will put up big numbers on Tech’s defense, and Tech’s offense will struggle for the second straight week.

#23 Ole Miss @ #25 LSU

Chad Kelly has excelled against even the toughest competition, while LSU’s offense falls back to earth without Leonard Fournette.

Washington State @ Arizona State

Washington State’s defense has greatly improved this year, and they show it off in a late night win over Arizona State.
