Biggest Winners and Losers from Week 6

Winners:

Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech dominated UNC in Chapel Hill to pick up a big win in the coastal division.  They also benefit from a Miami loss to Florida State.  Virginia Tech can now afford an ACC loss as long as they beat Miami, and hold a 2 game lead over the Tar Heels, last year’s division champs.

Florida

Florida did not play this week as their game against LSU was cancelled due to Hurricane Matthew. However, Tennessee lost in double overtime to Texas A&M.  Florida is now tied with Tennessee in the SEC East, with Tennessee holding the tiebreaker.  Tennessee still has to face Alabama next week, and a loss will put Florida in the division lead.

Navy

Navy pulled off their biggest win in over 30 years with a 46-40 upset victory over #6 Houston.  The Midshipmen ran the ball 63 times gaining over 300 yards on the ground.  Navy now sits at 3-0 in the AAC, and with a win over Memphis in 2 weeks, will be in a great posisiton to win their first ever conference championship (Navy has been independent for most of their history.)  The service academies are excelling so far this year with a combined record of 11-4.

Losers:

Louisville

Louisville’s playoff hopes took a big shot this week as Houston was upset by Navy.  Louisville is already on the outside looking in, and needed Houston to be undefeated and highly ranked for their matchup in late November.  It is likely that Houston will be the only remaining ranked team Louisville plays the rest of the season.  They need a convincing win over a marquee opponent to help them sneak into the playoff.

Washington

Washington beat rival Oregon 70-21 this weekend for the first time in over a decade.  However, the Huskies signature win over Stanford looks much worse after the Cardinal lost to Washington State by 26.  Outside of Utah, which is ranked at the edge of the top 25, Washington might not play a team ranked all season.  If Washington finishes undefeated they should still make the playoff.  However, a single loss combined with their weak schedule, may knock them out of the playoff.
