The College Football Playoff came out with their first
poll on Tuesday. The biggest
surprise was Texas A&M being ranked ahead of Washington. However, one should not look too hard
into these details as the committee starts new each week. If Washington wins out, they will pass
A&M by season’s end. There are
still a few takeaways from the rankings.
The first is that Louisville is at #7 is behind other one loss teams
Ohio State, and Texas A&M.
Louisville does not have another marquee matchup on their schedule, and
are unlikely to surpass either of those teams if both have the same
record. Another ranking of note is
Wisconsin at #8. While Wisconsin
is behind 2 Big 10 teams, they are ahead of the 2nd highest ranked
SEC team that isn’t in the playoff.
This is important, as Wisconsin is in the drivers seat for the Orange
Bowl. In the past the committee
has been unwilling to move teams down due to a loss in a conference
championship game, so if Wisconsin wins out prior to the Big 10 title game,
look for them to be in a good spot for the Big 10/SEC’s spot in the Orange
Bowl.
